Saw action in 47 games (25 starts) at BYU (2017-20) and totaled 204 tackles (122 solo), 15.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 15 passes defensed, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.Â
In 2020, he appeared in 12 games (nine starts) and registered 83 tackles (46 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, two passes defensed, one interception (returned for a touchdown), three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. In their win at Navy, Kaufusi tallied five solo tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and one forced fumble en route to winning the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor, becoming only the second BYU player to earn the award.Â
As a redshirt junior, he competed in 13 games (10 starts) and totaled 60 tackles (41 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, seven passes defensed, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Prior to the season, he was named to the watch list for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award.
In 2018, he was named to the Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team after he saw action in 11 games (six starts) and recorded 50 tackles (30 solo), 6.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, six passes defensed, two interceptions and one forced fumble.Â
As a redshirt freshman, he saw action in 11 games and registered 11 tackles (five solo).Â
