WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Colts logged one of the first major data points in their quarterback competition with their first training camp practice of 2025 on Wednesday at Grand Park.
Head coach Shane Steichen said both Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson Sr. "did some good things" in the Colts' hour-long, non-padded practice. Jones and Richardson split first-team reps evenly in seven-on-seven and full-team periods, which will be the case moving forward. Steichen explained the Colts' practices are set up to focus on specific things on each day, so splitting reps within practices gives both quarterbacks the opportunity to work on certain situations.
"We have third down day and we don't want one guy to get all the reps on third down," Steichen said. "Same with red zone."
The Colts will monitor Richardson's throw volume during training camp, but it won't impact his availability in those critical seven-on-seven and full-team periods. Steichen said the Colts may pull back on Richardson's throws during individual drills – when he's throwing routes on air to pass catchers without the defense on the field – to monitor how many passes he's attempting in a given day.
Steichen talked with both Jones and Richardson on Tuesday, when players arrived for training camp at Grand Park, and laid out his expectations for what he hopes to accomplish over the next month.
"I sat down with them and just talked about the consistency of the operation, moving the ball up and down the field — told those guys, too, (there's) no timetable on this thing," Steichen said. "But those guys (will) compete, let the process play out and we'll go from there."
Both Jones and Richardson appreciated Steichen's clear communication, not only on Tuesday but dating back to the offseason, and echoed the overall goal of their competition.
"I think just performing at a high level and showing consistency," Jones said. "My preparation, consistency on the field and my performance. It's a long process, and focusing on kind of what I'm doing day to day I think is the best way to go about it, so that's what I'm focused on."
"It's just loving the process," Richardson, who added his offseason focus was on completing more short and intermediate throws, said. "These past two years I've definitely tried to embrace that a little bit more. Everybody wants success, right here, right now. I feel like sometimes when you get success it's not really all what it seems. The process is really the best thing. That's really what I'm trying to enjoy now...there's definitely things I could have worked on last year so I'm trying improve on that and make sure I'm just available for the team whenever they need me."
News & notes from Wednesday's practice
- Jones had what might've been the most impressive throw of the morning when he dropped a deep ball down into the bucket down the sideline to wide receiver Anthony Gould for a chunk completion.
- Richardson had a handful of passes get dropped by Colts pass-catchers. "Day 1, we gotta knock the rust off," Steichen said. "Obviously we gotta clean those up and catch the football."
- Cornerback Kenny Moore II recorded the first interception of camp when he jumped a short Jones pass intended for wide receiver Josh Downs along the sideline.
- Cornerback Charvarius Ward forced an incompletion with sticky coverage on a deep ball toward wide receiver Alec Pierce in seven-on-seven. Ward also broke up a pass over the middle intended for Michael Pittman Jr. later in 11-on-11.
- Defensive tackle Grover Stewart batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage in 11-on-11.
- Linebacker Austin Ajiake – getting some work with the first-team defense with Zaire Franklin sidelined – had an impressive pass break-up over the middle in seven-on-seven.
- Linebacker Joe Bachie made a couple of plays in pass defense in an 11-on-11 period.
- Cornerback JuJu Brents forced an incompletion with some tight coverage on a sideline throw in seven-on-seven.
- Running back Tyler Goodson showed some good burst during a run-heavy portion of 11-on-11 work. Goodson, by the way, enters 2025 averaging 5.3 yards per carry in his career (240 yards on 45 attempts).
Players head to the Grand Park practice fields on the Blue Carpet for the first Colts Training Camp practice of 2025.
