INDIANAPOLIS –The Indianapolis Colts and Meijer, the Official Superstore of the Colts, partnered with Team Penske to provide local youth with a $200 shopping spree. On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, "Shop with a Colt" provided a special shopping experience for 40 underserved youth, ages 6-10, at the Fishers Meijer. Colts players, Team Penske IZOD IndyCar Series driver Will Power and volunteers from the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Indiana guided children through the store to help them with their purchases.
Santa Claus and Colts Mascot Blue joined the gathering to surprise children attending this event. The kids, from Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Indiana and Fall Creek Elementary School, were able to watch a movie while enjoying a pizza party compliments of Papa John's Pizza. Each child then received a $200 Meijer gift card to purchase holiday gifts for themselves and their families.
After signing autographs and taking group photos, Colts C Thomas Austin, RB Vick Ballard and OLB Lawrence Sidbury along with IndyCar Driver Will Power each teamed up with a child to help oversee their holiday shopping.
Many of the children had already planned their shopping lists in advance, but they soon learned they would need to make room for one more gift. This additional gift would not be for themselves; instead, each child was also provided an additional $20 Meijer gift card to purchase a toy to donate to the "Toys for Tots" program.
This is the seventh year the Colts and Meijer have teamed up for this holiday shopping event, and the Fourth year that Team Penske has been involved. This Colts "Community Tuesday" program was created to give children in need the opportunity to purchase items they could not otherwise afford while enjoying a special holiday experience with celebrities from the Indianapolis Colts and Team Penske. Meijer has supported several Colts outreach projects this year, including the SACKing Hunger Food Drive, Meijer Holiday Shopping and Horseshoe Helpings event.
