INDIANAPOLIS –One of the most important qualities for any defensive back playing at this level is not dwelling on past plays.
As the last line of defense, the secondary is often the most scrutinized unit on the defensive side of the ball.
The Colts secondary is coming off one of its finest performances of 2013 but that is firmly in the past.
Why? Well, ask Vontae Davis about Bengals Pro Bowler A.J. Green.
"Watch the film. He's got everything. He's the truth. He's blessed with God-given ability that you can't teach," Davis said of the opposition this weekend.
In 2013, Green has caught 72 balls for 1,103 yards and seven touchdowns.
Green is the only player in NFL history to record 100 receptions, 1,500 yards and 10 touchdowns in the first 20 games of his career.
"He's one of the best receivers in the NFL," Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton said of Green.
"He's so talented, plays the ball in the air really well. There's not much he really can't do. I'm definitely happy to have a guy like that on my team."
In preparing for Green, the Colts are hoping to get starter Greg Toler back in the lineup for the first time since Oct. 20.
Toler was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday with battling a groin injury.
Where Toler is most impressed with Green is the ability for Bengals receiver to get separation off the line of scrimmage, something Toler prides himself in stopping.
"He's physical. He's pretty good off the release and most 6'3", 6'4" receivers are not. He's an overall athlete," Toler said of Green.
"Playing defensive back you always enjoy these opportunities to play the up and coming receivers in the league that are so called the best."
Making adjustments to the ball in the air is another area where Green is considered one of the league's best.
Since Green and Dalton joined the Bengals with the team's first two picks in 2011, the plan has been to build around the young duo.
There's wide receiver Marvin Jones who's seven touchdowns is tied with Green.
The running back duo of BenJarvus Green-Ellis (618 total yards) and Giovani Bernard (875 total yards) has accounted for 11 touchdowns.
Throw in tight ends Jermaine Gresham (35 catches for 348 yards) and Tyler Eifert (32 catches for 386 yards) and the Bengals offense is beginning to take shape as a true Super Bowl contender.
"Now we're getting guys that have been in the system, that understand what they're doing," Dalton said.
"We feel like we've got guys that can make big plays all over the field and so it's just finding different ways to get those other guys the ball besides just A.J."
It all goes back to Green though and the Colts corners relish the chance to play against one of the game's elite.
"You are a professional," Darius Butler said. "In whatever you do, you want to play the best."
