Former Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard, a three-time first-team AP All-Pro and the 2018 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, will retire as a member of the Colts this weekend.
Leonard, who last played in the NFL in 2023, will attend the Colts' Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. He will make his retirement official at halftime with remarks to the crowd from the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, and Leonard, known as "The Maniac," will also be the Colts' pregame anvil striker just before kickoff on Sunday. Leonard will also hold a press conference Sunday morning at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Leonard joined the Colts as the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft; while a handful of analysts panned the Colts' second-round selection, the South Carolina State product made an immediate impact. In 2018, Leonard led the NFL with 163 tackles, and he stuffed his stat sheet with two interceptions, six pass break-ups, four forced fumbles, seven sacks and 12 tackles for a loss.
Leonard won 2018 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and was named a first-team AP All-Pro, and along with fellow guard Quenton Nelson became the first Colts players to earn first-team AP All-Pro honors as rookies since Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James did so in 1999.
In 2019, Leonard earned second-team AP All-Pro honors and was named to his first Pro Bowl behind a career-high five interceptions with five sacks, two forced fumbles, 121 tackles and seven tackles for a loss. Leonard again earned a first-team AP All-Pro nod in 2020 with 132 tackles, seven pass break-ups, three forced fumbles, three sacks and seven tackles for a loss.
2021 saw Leonard put together a remarkable season, with an NFL-best eight forced fumbles along with four interceptions and 122 tackles, earning him both his third first-team AP All Pro and Pro Bowl selection of his career. By the end of the 2021 season, Leonard became the only player in NFL history to total 15+ sacks, 15+ forced fumbles and 10+ interceptions in a 60-game span.
But Leonard had to fight through injury to play in 2021; when asked about nagging pain in his ankle, he would dryly say "it's attached." Leonard underwent a pair of procedures in 2022 and appeared in just three games; he returned in 2023 and played in nine games for the Colts, totaling 65 tackles, but his injuries, procedures and rehab stints had taken a toll. The Colts released Leonard in November, and he played five games with the Philadelphia Eagles to end the season.
Leonard was the Colts' Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in 2022, and also received the team's Ed Block Courage Award that season. He left a significant legacy in Indianapolis both on and off the field, with his contributions on the field matching the impact he made across his community.
"Colts Nation will always remember The Maniac's palpable energy on the field with each tackle, interception, punchout, and fumble recovery," late Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay said in a statement following Leonard's release in 2023. "Off the field, he's a servant leader and assisted numerous families in both his hometown and the Indianapolis community. We're thankful for Shaq and the contributions he made to our organization. We wish him and his beautiful family the best moving forward."
