The Colts on Wednesday opened cornerback Jaylon Jones' 21-day window to be activated from injured reserve, head coach Shane Steichen said.
Jones will begin participating in practice on Wednesday and can be activated off injured reserve at any point between today and Nov. 12 (which is during the Colts' bye week).
Jones missed a few weeks of training camp due to a hamstring injury, then sustained an injury to the same hamstring while on special teams during the Colts' Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins. The Colts placed Jones on injured reserve on Sept. 13.
Over his three years with the Colts, Jones has appeared in 35 games (27 starts) with two interceptions, 15 pass break-ups and 144 tackles. In 2024, Jones earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors with two interceptions in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears; he also totaled 100 tackles while starting all 17 games.
Jones' return to practice does not necessarily mean he will be activated off injured reserve for the Colts' Week 8 game against the Tennessee Titans, though it's encouraging news for a depleted secondary.
"We'll see how the week goes," Steichen said.
The Colts last week placed cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. on injured reserve due to a concussion; Ward will be eligible to return for the Colts' Week 12 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs. In August, 2025 third-round pick Justin Walley – who was tracking to start next to Ward and Kenny Moore II – sustained a season-ending torn ACL in a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens.
Check back later Wednesday for the Colts' first practice report of Week 8.
