Daniel Jones isn't known for his running ability, but he also isn't not known for it. In 72 career games, the 28-year-old quarterback has 422 carries for 2,281 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. He's among the names that come up when talking about dual-threat quarterbacks, but hasn't recently been one of the first that comes to mind.
In head coach Shane Steichen's offense this season, though, Jones could have a chance to revitalize that part of his game as well.
"I don't want to say sneaky, deceptive, because I don't think it's a secret," running back Jonathan Taylor said Thursday. "I think people know, like, he's a pretty athletic dude. So I'm excited for him to put it on display."
In 2022, Jones had the best rushing season of his career with 136 carries for 810 yards and eight touchdowns; he had the third-most rushing yards among quarterbacks that season, behind Justin Fields and Jalen Hurts.
Obviously, it's been three years since Jones' standout season. But that doesn't mean his speed, athleticism or ability to see the field has changed.
"He's fast," Taylor said. "Guys will hit 21 miles an hour in a game because of adrenaline, sprinting down the field. He's hitting 21 miles an hour in practice. So especially for a quarterback, that's unique...that was something that really caught my eye, for him to hit some of those speeds at practice."
Taylor hasn't just been impressed by Jones' ability to run the ball, either; he praised Jones' composure at the line of scrimmage and dedication to learning the team's offense.
"Him being a vet, he kind of knows how to go in with the standard order of operation," Taylor said. "But just really at the line, being able to soak in the system as well. Coming in, learning the system, soaking it in and being able to apply it...he's like the general on the field. So being able to have someone that knows that standard of operation is really big, because if you don't start off right then you've already set yourself up for failure."
