One of the main goals for head coach Shane Steichen and the Colts offense entering the 2025 season was to be efficient on offense. From sustaining finding ways to gain positive yardage no matter what, the Colts knew they needed to find ways to stay on the field and score.
So far, the Colts offense has proven capable of doing all that and more, as they are currently the most efficient NFL offense in terms of points per drive (3.46) this century. They have scored at least 25 points in six of their first seven games and a league-leading 232 total points through the first seven weeks of the season.
There are plenty of things that are factoring into the Colts' success: the offensive line, Daniel Jones and Tyler Warren, to name a few. But it's hard to find one that stands out more than Jonathan Taylor.
Taylor currently leads the NFL with 697 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns (10 rushing, one receiving). He is the first player in Colts history to have three games with at least three touchdowns in the same season, and Taylor's 10 rushing touchdowns through Week 7 are the most by a Colts player through that time span.
"It's unbelievable," Jones said. "Just week in and week out, to do what he's done has been really fun to watch. As a quarterback, obviously it's a huge deal and helps a ton. But yeah, he's been really, really impressive game after game, coming up with big runs, coming up with dirty runs that should be one or two-yard runs, and he gets five or six. I think all those plays really add up, keep us on schedule, help us maintain our efficiency on offense, and that's a huge, huge deal."
On the topic of those "dirty runs": Taylor leads all NFL running backs in yards after contact (472) and is second in forced missed tackles on a run with 28, second only to Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson. Taylor also leads the league in explosive (10-plus yard) runs with 18.
And it's not just in the run game that Taylor is contributing – he also has 23 receptions for 185 yards, already surpassing his season totals in receiving yards from each of the last three seasons.
"It's hard to fully say how good he's been," Jones said. "He's been really, really good."
