Brett Rypien has now been a part of three offenses in about the last six weeks.
First, he was with the Minnesota Vikings. Rypien joined the Vikings in August of 2024 and spent the season as the team's third-string quarterback, and remained with the Vikings until August 2025 when he was released as a part of roster cuts prior to the start of the season.
Three days after he was released by the Vikings, Rypien was picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals and signed to the practice squad. After Bengals starting quarterback Joe Burrow sustained a toe injury in Week 2, Rypien was signed to the team's active roster as the backup quarterback. On Oct. 7, Rypien was released following a trade that brought Joe Flacco to Cincinnati.
Now, Rypien has a spot in the Colts locker room. He arrived Wednesday evening from California after a cancelled flight delayed his arrival by a day, and immediately jumped into meetings and film study. But in being a part of a total of seven teams since he first started playing in the NFL in 2019, this kind of transition is nothing new for the quarterback.
"It's just trying to soak in as much information as I can," Rypien said. "Just trying to learn as much as I can and get up to speed...it's been a bit of a whirlwind, for sure, but glad to just finally get here, get to work."
The Colts signed Rypien to the practice squad earlier this week after Anthony Richardson Sr. was placed on injured reserve. Richardson will miss at least four weeks, leaving Rypien and rookie Riley Leonard the backups behind Daniel Jones.
Leonard will serve as the backup behind Jones for Week 7 vs. the Los Angeles Chargers. From there, head coach Shane Steichen said, they would "see how everything goes through the next couple weeks."

Rypien said there is some overlap in the concepts of the Vikings, Bengals and Colts' offenses – so the biggest thing to work on is learning the new kinds of terminology the Colts use.
"It's not necessarily learning, it's more of unlearning things that I've called stuff in the past," he said. "It's just trying to tie those two together, figure out what's what and then kind of go from there."
And thanks to his year with the Vikings, Rypien already has a good relationship with Jones, as Jones was signed to the Vikings' practice squad in November 2024.
"We kind of got to bond because we weren't really doing a whole lot out at practice," Rypien said. "So it's been great, he's been awesome so far."
"Brett is a great dude," Jones said. "He's super, super smart...Brett is a really smart, sharp guy – been in the league for a while and played in different offenses. So, excited to get to work with him again."
