Around the AFC South: Colts in sole possession of first place in division after Jaguars loss

The Jaguars lost to the Seahawks and the Titans lost to the Raiders on Sunday; the Texans were on a bye in Week 6.

afc south week 6

The Colts were the only AFC South team to walk away from Week 6 with a win, and have been rewarded with first place in the division because of it.

Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans lost on Sunday, with neither team able to mount a comeback. The Jaguars lost 20-12 to the Seattle Seahawks at EverBank Stadium, dropping their first home game of the season, and the Tennessee Titans fell 20-10 to the Las Vegas Raiders to move to 1-5.

The Houston Texans were on a bye and did not play; their next game will come on October 20 on Monday Night Football against the Seahawks.

Most importantly, the Jaguars' loss means the Colts are now in sole possession of first place in the division.

"It just puts a bigger target on your back," Jonathan Taylor said after the Colts' win. "It makes us understand we got to come out every single week ready to go. We're gonna get everyone's best shot."

Jaguars struggle with self-inflicted errors in first home loss of 2025

Through the first five weeks of the 2025 season, the theme for the Jaguars was takeaways. They had a league-leading 14 takeaways, with at least three in each of their first four games and a 99-yard pick-six in Week 5. But in Week 6, they didn't force a single turnover and some of their flaws were exposed.

The Jaguars' 20-12 loss was uncharacteristic in that way, as they gave up seven sacks for 44 yards (after allowing a total of six through the first five games) and were penalized 10 times for 76 yards. Trevor Lawrence, who suffered a total of 17 quarterback hits, was 27-of-42 for 258 yards and two touchdowns – but the Jaguars ultimately fell victim to their own mistakes.

Kicker Cam Little missed an extra point and a 50-yard field goal, the Jaguars' defense struggled to pressure Sam Darnold (recording just one sack) and many of their penalties came at crucial moments late in the game.

"We will not beat quality teams like this if we continue to hurt ourselves," head coach Liam Coen said. "We continue to hurt ourselves and have these self-inflicted wounds. That ultimately is on me."

The Jaguars were able to score a touchdown on their first drive of the fourth quarter, but in their following three drives they were only able to produce one first down. In total, the Jaguars had 17 first downs to the Seahawks' 13, but the Seahawks were able to hit the big plays, including a 61-yard touchdown and 53-yard field goal.

"They hit enough explosives and we didn't," Coen said. "That's the reality. We didn't get after their quarterback. They got after ours. They hit a couple of big plays in the pass game and we did not. We have to get after their quarterback more as they got after ours."

The Jaguars' loss was their first at EverBank Stadium this season, as they moved to 4-2 overall. They play the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7 at Wembley Stadium.

Titans unable to play catch-up in fifth loss of season

After notching their first win of the season in Week 5, the Titans were unable to carry that momentum forward as they took on the Raiders in Week 6. Their 20-10 loss was one in which they gave up points early before locking in defensively, but couldn't get anything going offensively.

"It's disappointing all the way around," head coach Brian Callahan said postgame. "It's disappointing we can't find a way to play better offensively, and that's why we're at where we're at...I am incredibly discouraged by the outcome. We felt good coming into the game, and to not be able to perform well on offense, and to not be able to score points, is disappointing. We all have to be better."

Quarterback Cam Ward was 26-of-38 for 222 yards and a touchdown, but he threw an interception and fumbled the ball away twice – with the first one leading to the Raiders scoring their first touchdown of the day. Ward was also sacked six times for 62 total yards.

"Real disappointed, just as an offense, especially myself," Ward said. "Any time you have three turnovers you are not going to have a chance to win the game. … I know I can't let it happen, but we have to keep going.

"At the end of the day, there's no excuses out there for us. We just have to be better, and I have to be better. Any time you are scoring 10 points, you are not winning the football game. Offensively, we just have to (help) the defense. They've done their part the whole season and we just have to start doing ours."

Simply put, the Titans just weren't good enough.

"Being honest, this was probably one of our worst weeks of practice," defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons said. "We came out flat Thursday, and…sometimes things carry over. In this league, you have to prove it every week, and keep proving it. We didn't do that. Today was bad football."

The Titans' next chance for a rebound will come against the New England Patriots at Nissan Stadium next week.
