Hobby was pivotal in the development of defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who was a part of his unit all four years after he joined the team as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. Hendrickson totaled 155 tackles (104 solo), 53.0 tackles for loss, 57.0 sacks, 12 passes defensed and 11 forced fumbles during that span. From 2021-24, he ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in sacks (third) and tackles for loss (eighth).
Under Hobby's direction in 2024, Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks, producing 17.5 sacks for the second consecutive season. He became the first Bengal and fifth player in NFL history to have at least 17.5 sacks in back-to-back years. Hendrickson's standout performance led to his fourth-straight Pro Bowl nod, as well as his first Associated Press First Team All-Pro selection and the Deacon Jones Award.
In 2023, Hendrickson set a single-season career high in sacks (17.5), which was the second-most across the NFL. He also totaled 16.0 tackles for loss. His sacks are the second-most in single-season team history.
The Bengals' defensive line anchored a unit that ranked seventh in rushing defense across the NFL (106.6 yards allowed per game) in 2022. Cincinnati also recorded the sixth-lowest points allowed per game (20.1). Hendrickson led the team once again in sacks, tallying 8.0 for the season. Defensive end Sam Hubbard also contributed a team-high 11.0 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.
In his first season with the Bengals in 2021, Hobby led a pass-rush resurgence that compiled 41.0 sacks on the year, which was more than double its total the prior season. The defense capped the regular season off as the fifth best in rushing defense (102.5 yards allowed per game) in the NFL. The line's dominance continued into the postseason as it tallied 10.0 sacks over a four-game span en route to Super Bowl LVI.
Prior to Cincinnati, Hobby was the defensive line coach with the Miami Dolphins for two seasons (2019-20). In 2020, his line was a part of a defensive unit that tied for the 10th-most sacks (41.0) in the league and ranked sixth in points allowed (21.1). In 2019, Hobby led the development of the team's first round pick, defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who led all rookie defensive linemen in tackles (56).
From 2017-18, Hobby served as the defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He helped defensive lineman Calais Campbell become the first player in team history to post double-digit sacks in consecutive seasons (14.5 in 2017, 10.5 in 2018). In 2017, the defense ranked second in the league in sacks (55.0) with four players recording at least 8.0 sacks each.
Before his return to the NFL, Hobby served as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach at Clemson for six seasons (2011-16) after previously being the defensive ends coach for the school in 2005. His second stint with the Tigers featured winning the 2016 National Championship, along with tallying three Orange Bowls and two College Football Playoff appearances. Clemson finished in the Top 25 in six consecutive seasons while Hobby was on staff. He was a part of a defense that totaled a nation-leading 579.0 tackles for loss from 2012-16.
While at Clemson, Hobby coached and developed Vic Beasley Jr., Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd. Beasley Jr. was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The following year, Lawson was selected in the first round by the Buffalo Bills and Dodd was a second-round selection by the Tennessee Titans in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Prior to Clemson, Hobby was the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Duke from 2008-2010. In his first year, the defense allowed 23.4 points per game, which was the lowest mark by the program in two decades.
Hobby entered the NFL coaching ranks with the New Orleans Saints as defensive line coach (2006-07). In his first year, the team won the NFC South, and he helped defensive end Will Smith collect 10.5 sacks and earn a Pro Bowl selection.
Before the NFL, Hobby was at the helm of Ole Miss' defensive line for six seasons (1999-2004) where he helped lead the Rebels to four bowl game appearances.
The beginning of his coaching career included experience on the strength and conditioning side with stints at Tennessee (1998), Louisiana-Lafayette (1996-97) and UT Martin (1995).
