Why The Colts Are Celebrating Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, but up until recently hadn't gained the proper historical notoriety and recognition it deserved. Colts To Celebrate 'Juneteenth' With New Scholarship, Inclusion Director
The Indianapolis Colts today announced the first of several steps to battle systemic racism and other forms of discrimination and to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are at the forefront of the team's business and community efforts.
The #BreakingBarriers initiative will include three components:
Fostering community dialogue. Throughout the year, Colts players, coaches and staff continue to host, take part in and support events that bring people together to discuss important community issues.
Inspiring community members. Throughout the year, the Colts will host and take part in activities that inspire Hoosiers to work toward the important goals of the effort.
Funding community initiatives. The Irsay family and Colts players joined together to form the Players' Action Fund in 2017 to support local nonprofits working in these important areas. The Colts will match contributions to this fund from current and former players up to $250,000. Colts players and staff collaboratively determine the process, timeline and guidelines for the funds. Aside from this fund, the Irsay family also independently supports numerous nonprofits in Indiana that are dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion.
