Colts Draft Albany State Defensive Lineman Grover Stewart In Fourth Round

Posted Apr 29, 2017

Intro: The compensatory pick the Colts gained in 2017 went to Albany State defensive lineman Grover Stewart in Saturday’s fourth round of the NFL Draft.

INDIANAPOLIS – With back-to-back picks in closing out Round Four, the Colts returned to the defensive side of the ball.

Albany State defensive tackle Grover Stewart was the choice at No. 144 overall.

Getting To Know Grover Stewart

-Why Stewart?

The first of more than a dozen visits for Stewart during the draft process was to the Colts. They ended up being the call for Stewart in Saturday’s fourth round. Over the past few months, Chris Ballard has said that two positions he will always look towards during the draft will be offensive line and defensive line. Those two positions popped up in Round Four on Saturday.

-Stewart’s Productivity

Even though Stewart comes from the Division II level, his production catches one’s eye. Stewart had 27.0 sacks at more than 330 pounds from the defensive line interior. The NFLPA All-Star game invited Stewart and the big fella felt he more than held his own against Division I level talent. At 6-5 and 334 pounds, Stewart will easily be one of the Colts’ most physically imposing defensive players from Day One.

-Where Does Stewart Fit In 2017?

The Colts believe Stewart can play all over the defensive line, with the interior being the more likely home for the fourth-round pick. Like fellow fourth rounder Zach Banner on the offensive line, Stewart is not going to be needed immediately. Defensive line can be grouped in with safety and wide receiver as the most competitive position groups on the roster.
