INDIANAPOLIS —Another former Indianapolis Colts coach is headed west.

The Denver Broncos today announced the hiring of Greg Williams, who had been the Colts' defensive backs coach the past two seasons, to the same position.

Williams is the second coach from the Colts' 2017 staff to head to Denver, as Tom McMahon was also named the Broncos’ special teams coordinator on Wednesday.

Williams, who played wide receiver and defensive back at the University of North Carolina from 1994-97, competed in training camp with the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, and also spent time in NFL Europe, the XFL and the Arena League.

He began his coaching career as an intern at Arizona State University before moving on to the College of DuPage (assistant coach; 2004-05), Arkansas Tech University (defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator; 2006-07) and the University of Pittsburgh (2008; secondary/defensive graduate assistant).

Williams made the jump to the NFL in 2009 when he was hired as an assistant linebackers coach with the San Diego Chargers; he became an assistant secondary coach with the Chargers in 2013 and stayed in San Diego until 2016, when he was hired as the Colts' defensive backs coach.

In his first season guiding the Indy defensive backs, the group recorded eight interceptions and 68 passes defensed. They improved those numbers to 13 interceptions and 81 passes defensed in 2017, despite the fact injuries and other factors led to several rookies or first-year players taking a majority of the snaps for a good chunk of the season.

The Colts, meanwhile, are yet to hire a new head coach after their decision to part ways with Chuck Pagano after six seasons. General manager Chris Ballard said last week the team's new head coach will have input into the members of his staff in Indy.
