"The day isn't over. We have an afternoon practice as well. It's hot out here, but I think that's where our offseason conditioning is supposed to kick in. All the work that (Strength and Conditioning Coach) Jon Torine does with us keeps the guys in good shape. You can find out real quick what kind of shape a guy is in with this heat by how they respond. The key is not as much physical, but mental. It's how well a guy can handle the checks in the heat. I thought guys responded well with that today. I think the first day in pads is the ultimate test for the young players. You see how they respond in pads. It's a good start. We just have to keep it going."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on RBs-Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai on the first day of camp) Training Camp
"It might be too early to tell. I think that's what both of those guys know they are going to be getting into. A 1st-and-10 run here in a practice here in Terre Haute is going to be analyzed and broken down. It's probably a good test for them to get ready for the season. Those guys will be scrutinized. I think both of them are ready for the challenge."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on what the staff does to keep the players hydrated in the extreme heat) Training Camp
"(Head) Coach (Tony) Dungy is the one who sets up the schedule. He is very health conscious. I think he realizes that if a guy goes down because of dehydration, it doesn't help the team at all. He is always stressing for us to drink plenty of fluids. Ultimately, it is up to the player to take care of themselves in the heat, at night getting their rest, staying hydrated and watching what they eat."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on coming out immediately in full pads) Training Camp
"Well, that's the way it's going to be. You know it's going to be that way. I think it's good even for the quarterbacks. Obviously we're not out there getting banged on but being in shoulder pads is different than jerseys and shorts. It's good to get out there and get the timing. The receivers get to get banged on and the tight ends get banged on so the timing is a little bit different. The more practices you have in pads the better."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the large crowd of fans in Terre Haute) Training Camp
"You certainly enjoy seeing the great turnout of fans here in Terre Haute. You see a lot from Terre Haute, but I signed a lot of Sports Illustrateds today and you check the addresses. You see them from all over the country. I saw some today from South Carolina and Massachusetts. It's good to see that kind of turnout."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on how the organization has changed in regards to fan base) Training Camp
"I think that is where this team has changed in the fact that our fan base has grown nationwide. I think it's somewhat international. I get a lot of fan mail from people overseas, a lot of soldiers and some international places as well. I think that's the type of team and organization you want to be playing for, a team that people are driving from all over to see you practice and to see you play. That's why we have more national TV games. That's where (President) Bill Polian has taken this organization."
