Jim Caldwell Dec. 18 Quotes

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On if DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were on a strict play count last night) “Every week will be a little bit different.

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On if DE's Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were on a strict play count last night) * *

"Every week will be a little bit different.  What we did with them was not necessarily a strict number count, but we used them more on third-down rushes and second and long.  We decided to get a little bit more work out of some other guys."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On WR-Pierre Garcon's injury)

"(Pierre) Garcon was slowed a little bit.  We are not quite certain of the seriousness of it (hand).  That's one of the reasons why we had Hank (Baskett) in there.  He (Garcon) had a problem with his hand."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the team's positioning at this time)

"I like where we are.  Oftentimes, complexities arise when you are doing well.  We'll take those and deal with them as we go."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On making any decisions next week as opposed to this week)

"Last week was a little different because I had to make it a little quicker with the short week.  I have a little bit more time this week.  We will enjoy the weekend, assess where we are and take a good look at our injury situation.  The injury situation won't completely clear itself up for a few days.  When it does, then we'll have a look at that and make a decision."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On being 14-0 and playing the remaining regular season games)

"It's a great conversation for those who love our sport.  We know what the most important thing is.  We want to be in the best possible condition we can be in.  We want to do well in the playoffs.  That's what we think about and we'll adjust and move along game-by-game like we've done all year.  We'll make an assessment on how we'll play this next game some time in the future."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the players' reaction to winning last night)

"It was business-like.  They (players) were certainly happy.  They felt good about what they were able to accomplish.  That's a heck of a football team we played.  They (Jaguars) played extremely well.  There were nine lead changes in the ballgame.  That was a shootout at the OK Corral.  It was one of those games you didn't know who was going to win it.  They (Colts) found a way to get it done.  They certainly were pleased with how they finished the game.  We still have a lot of work to do.  We are showing signs of improvement.  That's the key."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the play of the defense against Jacksonville)

"It was one of those things in which we faced a great running back that ran the ball extremely well.  He had 110 yards.  We didn't do as good a job as we're capable of doing.  We didn't play as well from a gap control standpoint.  We didn't tackle nearly as well.  That is going to happen sometimes.  We certainly wouldn't like it to happen that way.  It did, but they (defense) stiffened in the fourth quarter.  They did a nice job in terms of making sure they (Jaguars) didn't get into the end zone.  They (defense) did a great job all-around in terms of hustle and effort.  Our defense, one week we have maybe one of the best performances I've seen around here in a long time and then the next week we don't play quite as well.  That gives us something to work on and something to improve upon for next week."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the play of the secondary against Jacksonville)

"We had to tackle well in the secondary against Jacksonville because they force you to.  Oftentimes, they (Jaguars) block everyone else except your cornerback.  Cornerbacks are not known for the most part to be guys that will support the run well and often.  Our guys do.  Kelvin (Hayden) did a nice job squeezing and making tackles.  (Jacob) Lacey did a tremendous job.  Overall, (Antoine) Bethea and (Melvin) Bullitt did a tremendous job as well.  Those guys get downhill and do a great job of filling their gaps.  We had Jamie (Silva) step in and do a great job as well.  Overall, I think they played tough.  They (secondary) did tackle well.  I still think we have a lot of work to do."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On being undefeated at home before the playoffs)

"I think it's important. We always want to improve and try to find some areas we can become a little bit better in.  We try to focus in on those things more so than anything else.  I don't know if an unbeaten record at home or on the road makes a difference in the playoffs.  The playoffs are their own separate entity.  We want to make certain we are functioning well and at the top of our game when it's time to get going."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On having RB-Donald Brown and WR-Anthony Gonzalez back)

"We'd like to have them back as quickly as we possibly could.  They would have the chance to get a little work prior to the end of the regular season. That's up to the good Lord and his grace and mercy of healing those guys as quickly as they can.  Whenever they are back, we can utilize their services."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On RB-Chad Simpson's kickoff return for a TD against Jacksonville)

"That was big.  That (touchdown) came at a real opportune time.  We were down.  It seemed like Jacksonville had a pretty good roll going at that time.  For him to take that thing back and put it in the endzone, was huge.  We haven't had one since 2004."
