Colts Friday Notebook: T.Y. Hilton Misses Practice Again

Intro: The Colts had their second official practice of the week on Friday with one more coming Saturday before Monday night’s encounter with the Jets. What does the injury report look like heading into Saturday’s final practice?

INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts held a bit of walk-through on Friday, focusing on short-yardage packages during their on-the-field work. Saturday will be the Colts final practice of Jets week.

The four players who missed Thursday's practice also sat out Friday, putting their status for Monday night in serious jeopardy.

Here are a few sound bites from Pep Hamilton, Greg Manusky and Frank Gore meeting the media on Friday:

Pep Hamilton on what he sees from the Jets defense:

"The Jets do a good job of putting a lot of guys near the line of scrimmage and trying to make you one-dimensional."

Bowen's Analysis:* *Listening to Colts players and coaches talk this week, they see plenty of similarities in the defenses of the Bills and Jets. Hamilton was specific in this comment for what the Jets are looking to do to an offense with a revamped New York secondary.

Hamilton said on Friday that the Colts have to have more offensive balance and that of course means getting Frank Gore more involved. With T.Y. Hilton not practicing on Friday, there's a definite possibility Hamilton could be operating without his top offensive weapon against the Jets pressure-packed defense.

Greg Manusky on having Vontae Davis shadow other wide receivers:

"It's those quality players who can lock down a guy and make an offense alter their plan."

Bowen's Analysis: Manusky wouldn't say whether or not Davis will be shadowing a Jets wide receiver (likely Brandon Marshall, if Davis does shadow) on Monday night.

Perhaps the bigger storyline heading into Monday night is the rest of the health at the cornerback position. Darius Butler, D'Joun Smith and Greg Toler have all missed practice this week. That means the Colts have had just three healthy cornerbacks this week at practice (Davis, Jalil Brown, Sheldon Price).Frank Gore on his style as a running back:

"I feel like the more I play, the better I get."

Bowen's Analysis: Gore thinks the Jets defense brings an even tougher front to what the Colts saw last week. That means the challenge could be even more difficult on Monday to get Gore going in the run game.

Even finding Gore in the passing game should be a priority for this offense. Andrew Luck pointed out earlier this week that the quarterback missed Gore on some potential big plays in the passing game. Gore is definitely looking forward to getting back in front of the fans after the reception he received during his preseason action in August.

Here is the injury report for Friday:

  • DNP: Darius Butler (hip), WR-T.Y. Hilton (knee), CB-D'Joun Smith (knee), CB-Greg Toler (neck)

-These four appeared on the injury report for a second straight day as guys who did not participate. It's definitely key for these guys to practice Saturday in order to have a chance to play on Monday. Under Chuck Pagano hardly any Colt player who has missed an entire week of practice has gone on to play in that upcoming game.

  • LIMITED: OLB-Robert Mathis (Achilles), Bjoern Werner (knee)

-Mathis remains limited at practice.

  • FULL: OG-Todd Herremans (shoulder ), ILB-D'Qwell Jackson (toe)

-These two veterans were upgraded to full participants on Friday's practice.
