Harrison storms record books again
(12-28-08) - A week after claiming third place on the NFL’s all-time receptions list, Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison climbed another rung in the record books. In the second quarter on 2nd down and 2, quarterback Jim Sorgi hit Harrison for a quick three-yard pass sending Harrison past former Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter with 1,102 catches. [PLAY]
Addai speeds past Titans defender for touchdown reception
(12-28-08) - Lined up as an outside receiver, Colts running back Joseph Addai made his longest reception of the season. Quarterback Peyton Manning stepped back and rifled a shot to Addai on a screen pass. Addai evaded two Titans defenders and outran the secondary to the end zone. The 55-yard play elevated Manning past the 4,000-yard mark for his NFL record ninth-consecutive season. [PLAY]
Jaguars run out of time, Colts clinch playoff berth
(12-18-08) - The Jaguars traveled 83 yards on their final possession to put themselves in position to tie the game. With 12 seconds on the clock, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard was sacked for a nine-yard loss at the Colts 16-yard line. The Jaguars were out of timeouts, and the Colts clinched a playoff berth as the game ended. [PLAY]
Ratliff returns interception for game-winning touchdown
(12-18-08) - The Colts entered the fourth quarter down 10 points. A Dallas Clark touchdown reception and Adam Vinatieri field goal knotted the game at 24-24. With 4:58 left in the game, Colts defensive back Keiwan Ratliff intercepted Jaguars quarterback David Garrard’s pass. Ratliff took the pick 34 yards for the score in what would prove to be the game-winning touchdown. [PLAY]
Manning uses footwork to aid touchdown pass
(12-18-08) - Down 14-0 in the second quarter, the Colts needed a catalyst to spark their offense. Quarterback Peyton Manning rolled out of the pocket and slung a 41-yard pass to a wide-open Reggie Wayne for his sixth touchdown reception of the season. Wayne walked into the end zone to slice the lead 14-7. [PLAY]
Harrison secures third place on NFL's all-time reception list
(12-14-08) - The Colts refused to be upset by the winless Lions at Ford Field in Detroit. In the fourth quarter with the game tied 21-21, quarterback Peyton Manning found Marvin Harrison on a 16-yard slant route. Harrison was chased down at the Colts 36-yard line, and the reception bolted Harrison past former Oakland Raider Tim Brown into third place on the all-time NFL receptions list with 1,015. Colts running back Dominic Rhodes scored later in the drive on a one-yard touchdown run. [PLAY]
Hayden's long interception return buries Bengals
(12-07-08) - As if the Bengals day at Lucas Oil Stadium was taxing enough, Colts defensive back Kelvin Hayden put a further damper on the Bengals morale. Late in the fourth quarter, Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s pass was intercepted by Hayden. Hayden ran 85 yards untouched into the end zone to notch the Colts sixth consecutive victory. [PLAY]
Destructive duo of Freeney and Mathis combine for sack
(12-07-08) - The Colts defense was a popular resident in the Bengals backfield, as Indianapolis finished with five sacks on the day. On 3rd-and-14 at the Colts 29-yard line, Colts defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis fought their way to Bengals quartrerback Ryan Fitzpatrick for the second time in the series. [PLAY]
Colts interception leads to touchdown
(12-07-08) - The Bengals knew Colts quarterback Peyton Manning would be phenomenal after the nine-time Pro Bowler was held without a touchdown in the previous week for the first time in more than five years. Colts defensive back Kelvin Hayden intercepted Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer’s pass and returned it to just outside of the red zone. Two plays later, Manning lasered a pass to Marvin Harrison for the five-yard score. [PLAY]
Bethea shatters Browns comeback attempt
(11-30-08) - When Browns backup quarterback Derek Anderson injured his knee on the final drive of the game, Ken Dorsey attempted to fill the void. He was to no avail however, and Colts defensive back Antoine Bethea intercepted a deep pass to hinder Cleveland’s comeback. [PLAY]
Mathis scores lone touchdown of the game
(11-30-08) - While the Colts offense was held stagnant, their defense produced all the points Indianapolis needed. In the final frame, Adam Vinatieri’s 30-yard field goal in the first quarter was the only points to show for the Colts. That’s until Colts defensive end Robert Mathis scooped up a fumble from Browns quarterback Derek Anderson on the Cleveland 37-yard and sprinted into the end zone for the touchdown with 9:55 left in the game. Dwight Freeney forced the fumble when he flew by the offensive line and punched the ball out of Anderson’s right hand. [PLAY]
Sweet redemption: Vinatieri kicks game-winning field goal
(11-23-08) - Colts quarterback Peyton Manning’s quest to drive the Colts was complete. He yielded to kicker Adam Vinatieri, who was set up for a game-winning kick. Vinatieri plunked what would have been a go-ahead 28-yard field goal in the last minute of the Colts 23-21 loss against the Chargers in 2007. Vinatieri left no question in 2008. He shipped the 51-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to give the Colts the 23-20 victory. [PLAY]
Manning sets up Vinatieri for victory
(11-23-08) - With 1:35 left in the game, Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding tied the game with a 47-yard field goal. The momentum from his late-game heroics was short lived, however. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was determined to guide Indianapolis to victory. On a daring call, head coach Tony Dungy decided to go for it on fourth-and-inches at the San Diego 48-yard line. The dividends were gratuitous as Manning lofted a play action pass to Marvin Harrison for a 14-yard completion. [PLAY]
Gonzalez ties game with touchdown reception
(11-23-08) - Peyton Manning bounced back from an earlier interception to tie the game at 10-10, when he found Anthony Gonzalez wide open for a touchdown. Running back Joseph Addai busted for a 23-yard scamper earlier in the drive to put the Colts in solid field position. On third-and-short, Manning stepped back and tossed the ball to Gonzalez, who had escaped San Diego defenders on a pick route. [PLAY]
Bullitt snipes interception
(11-16-08) - For the second consecutive game, Melvin Bullitt delivered a big-time interception. With the final seconds ticking from the clock, Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels chucked a pass intended for tight end Owen Daniels. However, Bullitt lunged in Daniels’ path, grabbed the interception, and slid to the ground to give the Colts their third consecutive victory. [PLAY]
Freeney becomes familiar with Rosenfels
(11-16-08) - The Colts defensive front wreaked havoc in the Texans backfield in the final minutes of their game against Houston in October. It was déjà vu for Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels when Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney sacked Rosenfels for the second time of the day. With the Texans trailing 33-27 with less than two minutes left in the game, Freeney battled his way into the backfield to get to Rosenfels at the Texans 29-yard line. [PLAY]
Harrison bullies into the end zone
(11-16-08) - Seeking revenge from a monumental meltdown in Houston, the Texans over-aggressive defense wasn’t enough. Toggling back-and-forth, the Colts took the upper hand in a 23-20 game. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Peyton Manning gunned a pass to Marvin Harrison. Harrison caught the ball and dragged two Houston Texans into the end zone to extend the Colts lead to 10 points. [PLAY]
Bullitt hauls in last second interception once more
(11-09-08) - In the final seconds of the game, Ben Roethlisberger charged the Steelers down the field. Mewelde Moore was unable to get out of bounds on third and long, and on fourth down Roethlisberger rushed his team to the 27-yard line. As time expired, Roethlisberger lofted a pass to the end zone. The ball bounced off of the hands of Nate Washington and Colts defensive back Melvin Bullitt snatched the interception to give Indianapolis its second consecutive victory. [PLAY]
Rhodes finds good time for first career touchdown reception
(11-09-08) - Entering the game, Dominic Rhodes had never caught a touchdown pass. Rhodes had no better timing to haul in his first career touchdown pass than with 3:10 left in the game. Manning faked a handoff to Rhodes who continued on a wheel route. Manning found Rhodes wide open toward the right sideline, and Rhodes strutted into the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown giving the Colts their first lead of the game. [PLAY]
Jennings prevents Steelers from closing the door
(11-09-08) - Up 20-17 in the waning minutes, the Steelers looked to close the door on the Colts. Colts defensive back Tim Jennings had other plans. Jennings stripped Ben Roethlisberger’s pass away from Santonio Holmes and returned it to the Steelers’ 33-yard line giving Peyton Manning’s offense a chance to take the lead. [PLAY]
Wayne makes miraculous catch
(11-09-08) - The Colts looked to answer the Steelers first quarter touchdown drive. On the fourth play of the series, quarterback Peyton Manning aired a pass down the sideline to wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Pittsburgh defender Ike Taylor tipped the pass, but the ball fell in the waiting hands of Wayne. Wayne spun around Steelers cornerback Ryan Clark and trotted into the end zone for a 65-yard score. [PLAY]
Vinatieri comes clutch against former team
(11-02-08) - Adam Vinatieri has been heralded as one of the greatest clutch kickers in NFL history. Against his former team, Vinatieri’s antics were no different. With the game tied at 15-15 and 8:09 remaining in the game, Vinateiri boomed a game winning 52-yard field goal- his longest since 2002. A flag was tossed on the play, but the infraction was tagged against the Patriots. The penalty was declined, and the Colts snatched an 18-15 advantage. [PLAY]
Deja vu: Sanders comes up with another late-game interception against Patriots
(11-02-08) - After a personal foul against the Patriots, New England faced a daunting 4th and 15 from the Colts 45-yard line. With four minutes left in the game, the Patriots decided to go for it. Quarterback Matt Cassel heaved a pass over the middle, but Colts safety Bob Sanders flew into the air at the 25-yard line and snatched his first interception of the season, securing a much-needed victory. [PLAY]
Gonzalez scores again to take the lead
(11-02-08) - Down 12-7, Peyton Manning orchestrated another touchdown drive. On third and goal from the New England 9-yard line, wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez rode the hip of Patriots defensive back Mike Richardson. Manning threw to Gonzalez’s outside shoulder, and Gonzalez spun around to retrieve his second touchdown catch of the day. [PLAY]
Brock knocks around Cassel
(11-02-08) - Coming out of intermission, the Patriots ailed to take their first lead of the game. Quarterback Matt Cassel decided to take matters into his own hands when he scrambled five yards to the Colts 41-yard line. He was met by Raheem Brock who administered a catastrophic blow. [PLAY]
Manning accentuates long drive with touchdown pass to Gonzalez
(11-02-08) - Even without Tom Brady, the Patriots offense can be devastating. Quarterback Peyton Manning and company kept New England’s offense off of the field in a 15 play, 91-yard drive that lasted 9:02. Manning found wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez toward the front of the end zone to give the Colts an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. [PLAY]
Manning finds wide open Clark in the end zone to extend Colts lead
(10-27-08) - Under the lights of Monday Night Football, the Colts faced a tough test on the road against the undefeated Tennessee Titans. Up 7-6 with 11:11 in the second quarter, quarterback Peyton Manning pump faked in the way of Reggie Wayne. The fake confused the Titans secondary, allowing tight end Dallas Clark to escape wide open into the middle of the field. Manning seamed a spiral to Clark for his second touchdown reception of the game. [PLAY]
Rhodes puts Colts on scoreboard with grueling touchdown run
(10-19-08) - After Packers kicker Mason Crosby nailed a 31-yard field goal on Green Bay’s first drive of the game, the Colts retaliated with points of their own. Even with 12 men on the field, the Packers couldn’t stop running back Dominic Rhodes from budging into the end zone. Down 3-0 with 4:11 in the first quarter, Rhodes took a handoff three yards and powered behind offensive tackle Charlie Johnson into the end zone. [PLAY]
Colts collect first victory at Lucas Oil Stadiuim
(10-12-08) - With 12 seconds left in the game, the Ravens attempted to score to make the game less lopsided. Ravens Joe Flacco found Demetrius Williams in the middle of the field at the Colts 11-yard line. Williams was greeted immediately by Colts defensive backs Antoine Bethea and Marlin Jackson. The clock winded down, and the Colts captured their first home victory of the season. With running backs Joseph Addai and Mike Hart hampered by injuries, quarterback Peyton Manning catapulted the Colts to victory with 271 yards passing and three touchdowns. [PLAY]
Mathis returns to backfield for second sack of the day
(10-12-08) - With the Ravens in town, a tenacious defense is expected. However, Baltimore didn’t expect it in the form of Colts defensive end Robert Mathis. Down 31-0 with 1:49 in the third quarter, the Ravens were threatening at the Colts 10-yard line. Mathis scooted by Baltimore’s offensive line and sacked Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco for the second time of the game. Mathis would go on to sack Flacco once more and recover a fumble to cap off his career day. [PLAY]
Harrison surges past defense for touchdown reception
(10-12-08) - The Colts had yet to win a game at the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison reverted to RCA Dome tactics to energize Indianapolis. On the second series of the game, Manning connected with Harrison on a play action pass down the right sideline. Harrison sped by Ravens defensive back Ed Reed and scurried into the end zone unscathed for his 125th career touchdown reception. [PLAY]
Bullitt clinches victory with interception
(10-05-08) - With the Colts trailing 27-24 with 2:00 remaining, they needed just a few more yards to take the lead. It was first and goal from the Texans 5-yard line. Quarterback Peyton Manning lined up under center and found Reggie Wayne on a fade route in the corner of the end zone for a sensational one handed catch that gave the Colts the lead for good 31-27. [PLAY]
Manning connects with Wayne for go-ahead touchdown
(10-05-08) - Late in the fourth quarter and trailing 27-24 the Colts needed one more stop. They forced a third and long situation for the Texans, and Robert Mathis made another huge play. Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels rolled out and was chased down from behind by Mathis. Mathis dived full out for Rosenfels and forced the ball out of his hand. Mathis got up and fell right back down on top of the ball to give the Colts a first and 10 on the Texans 20-yard line with 2:36 left to play in the game. [PLAY]
Colts helicopter quarterback Rosenfels to force turnover
(10-05-08) - The Colts needed a big time defensive stop late in the fourth quarter, and they got one.
