A Categorical Look at the Day in Colts Camp
EYE ON CAMP

Among those attending Wednesday’s Colts 2008 Training Camp practice was a face familiar to Indianapolis-area college basketball fans.

The face was that of Indiana University Head Coach Tom Crean.

Crean, the head coach at Marquette University from 1999-2008, was hired by Indiana on April 1, 2008, and when he visited the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, it didn’t take long for him to receive a request from a fairly influential Colts figure.

Or to get a further feel for expectations regarding his program.

“I got to make my ticket requests in person so it was good to see that,” Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said with a smile between a pair of practices on Wednesday.

“He (Crean) is a good guy – a really good coach. I talked to him on the phone when he was still at Marquette and he seems like a really good guy. I’m a big IU fan, so I told him, ‘No pressure,’ that we didn’t expect a national championship with everything that was going on, but a Big 10 Championship would be nice.’’

CAMP SKED

The Colts held two practices Wednesday at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute – a full-team practice at 8:30 a.m. and a special teams practice at 3:30 p.m. The Colts will practice at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

WEATHER REPORT

The temperature in Terre Haute on Wednesday reached 78 degrees. According to weather.com, the forecast for Thursday calls for a high of 79 degrees.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Jacob Tamme has spent the past week making plays, and showing the potential that caused the Colts to select him in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

On Wednesday morning, he did it again.

Tamme, a tight end from the University of Kentucky, turned in one of the more memorable plays of the day during a red-zone drill in the Colts’ morning practice.

On the play, Tamme – who caught five passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-20 preseason loss to Carolina in Charlotte, N.C., this past Saturday night – ran a route toward the center of the end zone. Reserve quarterback Jared Lorenzen threw a high pass.

Tamme leapt and caught the pass, getting both feet down in the end zone for a touchdown.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

--- On a similar play to the one that produced Tamme’s touchdown, Colts veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne caught a high pass from quarterback Jim Sorgi for a touchdown.

--- Rookie safety Brandon Foster continued to have a solid camp, intercepting a pass in the corner of the end zone during red-zone drills.

--- Third-year cornerback T.J. Rushing continued to have a solid camp, deflecting a pass to wide receiver Onrea Jones in the morning practice.

--- Wide receiver Marvin Harrison caught several passes in the morning practice, including one on a quick out pattern.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The starters, we really haven’t played that much. We basically try to look at the young guys. The young guys have been looking good. A lot of guys look like they’re going to help us during the year. That’s what we’re looking for right now.”

--- Colts Defensive End Raheem Brock

TRIVIA QUIZ

The Colts have won 12 games in each of the past five seasons, a franchise record. How many regular seasons with 12 or more victories had the Colts had in franchise history before 2002?

DUNGY SAYS

“I’m looking forward to it (playing in new Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis). I saw it on TV the other night and it looked fabulous. I think our players are excited. We’re going to work out there on Tuesday and I think we’re all looking forward to that.”

--- Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy
