Routine Procedure Removes Infected Bursa Sac from Quarterback's Left Knee
INDIANAPOLIS - Peyton Manning underwent a routine procedure on his knee on Monday afternoon.

Manning, preparing to enter his 11th season as the Colts’ starting quarterback, underwent a procedure to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee, Colts President Bill Polian said in a statement Monday evening.

The statement:

“Peyton Manning had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee this afternoon. The procedure was routine. The Colts’ medical staff expects a full and complete return to action in four to six weeks.

“Peyton had been receiving conservative treatment for an inflamed bursa sac in consultation with the club’s medical staff since February, 2008. This course of treatment was productive until Peyton experienced increased pain and early signs of infection.

“Peyton will meet with the press as normally scheduled at the opening of training camp.”

Manning, the No. 1 overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Colts, never has missed a regular-season start in 10 NFL seasons. He has played in the Pro Bowl eight of the last nine seasons and was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2003 and 2004.

He was the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl following the 2006 season.

The Colts are scheduled to open training camp at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., next Thursday and are scheduled to play the Washington Redskins in the Hall of Fame game – the NFL’s preseason opener – in Canton, Ohio, on Sunday. August 3.
