The Mission
Hoosier hospitality is inherent in all of us. It’s caring on a personal level. It’s performing random acts of kindness. It’s giving a ride to a friend, helping a sick neighbor or simply buying a stranger a cup of coffee. In these challenging times, the Indianapolis Colts are launching the "Help a Hoosier…and then some" campaign to help strengthen our community and empower Hoosiers to create change by engaging in random acts of kindness across the State of Indiana.

To kick off this initiative, the Colts and Gleaner’s Food Bank will host a Help a Hoosier Canned Food Drive Friday, March 20, on Monument Circle, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. See below for event information.
**Click on the Help a Hoosier card above to send it to your printer.
What is "And Then Some"?
The spirit of this initiative is the basis of what makes a Hoosier. Giving freely of yourself for the goodwill of another. Print out one of these cards by clicking on the image to the left and then pass it on to the person for whom you do your act of service.

How Can I Participate?
It's really quite easy to perform random acts of kindness, but sometimes thinking up what to do is a little tougher. Here is a list of acts of kindness to help you get started.

Ways to Help...
  • Have a clothing drive at work to donate to a homeless shelter.
  • Volunteer with your pet for pet therapy at a nursing home or children’s hospital ward.
  • Pay for a kid to play in a youth sports league.
  • Visit a nursing home.
  • Donate your kid’s old toys to charity.
  • Buy lunch for an intern.
  • Share your umbrella with someone who doesn’t have one.
  • Volunteer at your local elementary school (field trip chaperone, read to 1st graders, etc.)
  • Take a homeless person out for lunch.
  • Write a supportive and caring letter to a friend.
  • Click here for a longer list of Ways you can help!
The Event
Here is a recap of the canned food drive on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.

  • Collections will continue by Gleaner's, Indiana Farm Bureau Agents and Huntington Bank locations throughout the State of Indiana, culminating on Draft Day, April 25.
  • The Colts donation of food to the food bank brought in 10,072 pounds of food!
  • We also collected an additional 992 pounds of food on the circle from individual donors on Friday.
  • And thus far Indiana Farm Bureau has reported 1,000 pounds of food collected since the event on Friday!
  • We have also collected $260 at the event last Friday!
  • Indiana Farm Bureau is reporting an additional 1,000 pounds of food collected and Huntington Bank is reporting an additional 350 pounds of food collected
  • Total = 13,414 pounds of food and $260!

Newest Hoosiers Helping Hoosiers...
I was Helped by a Hoosier... Danielle Smith is my step-daughter. A few years ago, I was leaving for work and it was very early, icey & cold. As I opened my trunk to my car, the lid flung up & knocked me out. I called upstairs to our apt., & she came running out in her pajamas & slippers w/a blanket to cover me & called 911. I was 1/2 under the car & freezing. This is so special because this young woman, 19 at the time, ran out to help me after we had been fighting. She didn't even think twice about her own safety to the cold. She took care of me until help could arrive. Needless to say, I had a concussion & some damage to my back. As far as I am concerned, Danielle saved my life that day without second thought to her own self and that is why I feel I was helped by a Hoosier. To this day, she will be forever my hero because she saved my life. This is so unique because it was 4:30am & none of out neighbors got up to leave until after 6a.m.. I could have been laying there for a few more hours if it wasn't for Dani. (3-16-2010)
I Helped a Hoosier... Over 3,000 books delivered to the George Washington Community School’s near empty library today. Jen Moyer, Indy south sider, noticed the empty shelves in the school’s library while student teaching there last semester. “As soon as I saw the library, I decided I am making it a personal quest to get these kids the resources they desperately need to learn and succeed,” Jen said. She started the single handed outreach program in her community last September. Through the support and donations of The Julie Bandy Performing Arts Centre students and faculty, the IUPUI School of Education, Center Grove High School, and cash donations from family, The George Washington Community School library will now have fuller book shelves. Karen Pierce, the school librarian jumped to her feet, clapping when the books were delivered today. “It’s going to take forever to get these books sorted, but I am grateful to be able to offer our students more,” Karen commented. I Helped a Hoosier... I was driving home and the car in front of me struck a deer head on. I stopped to make sure she was ok and she was but she was scared to death. I helped her get her car off to the side of the road and then gave her a ride home. (1-25-2010)
I Helped a Hoosier... I'm the volunteer/volunteer coordinator at Legacy House-provides free counseling for victims of violent crime. We need volunteers! We also have a foster pet program for domestic violence victims' pets..homes needed for pets until victims can secure stable housing. I'm a volunteer--not paid staff. We need volunteers!! (1-21-2010)
I Helped a Hoosier... My brothers and myself own Reliable Comfort heating and Air Conditioning. A few weeks ago we recieved a request to look at a furnace for a homeowner. Upon our inspection we found the furnace was in a house that was flooded in June '08 and has not worked since. The owner didn't have the money to replace the furnace. We were able to get him a new furnace, ductwork and all labor to heat his home this winter. (12-29-2009)
I Helped a Hoosier... I'm currently unemployed. I've managed to help others in need. There's one particular need I wasn't able to fill. I didn't get a wheelchair for my cousin in a nursing home in Anderson, IN. I've told a few of my friends - maybe this wasn't my mountain to climb; it was hers or her familys'. On my way home last night I realized she was unable to climb the mountain because of not having feet to stand on. The particulars surrounding her family are unimportant. Its plain and simple she requires assistance. Although she's beyond debt due to medical bills from surgeries, hospitalizations, and her current care - there appears to be a crack or a hole some hoosiers fall into. Her current wheel chair is borrowed and her legs are being propped with multiple pillows for support. During one transport, I rode in the rear of the van to hold her legs up. If someone has a wheelchair with legs supports - write me. I took my Christmas money - bought her gifts to give. Small gifts make a difference (12-25-2009)
I Helped a Hoosier... Ashtyn is a 17-year old Jr. at Mooresville HS. She attended a church camp this summer where she received a challenge to feed 500 families at Thanksgiving. She was excited from the beginning and knew she could do it! In Oct., Ashtyn purchased plastic tubs and made a list of non-perishable food items. She then sold the tubs for $15 each to churches, schools, family and friends. Each person purchased the non-perishable items & returned the tubs to Ashtyn. She then purchased gift cards with the money from the tubs so each family could purchase a turkey or ham. She worked with the local Churches in Mission to distribute the tubs to needy families. As the project was nearing the end, another charity contacted Ashtyn and ask if she was going to have any extra food because they had a greater need then they thought. A request was made for individuals to contribute more dollars if possible & Ashtyn bought the additional food that was needed. In total, she filled 559 tubs with food and gift cards (12-18-2009)
I Helped a Hoosier... I really don't know if this is where to find help. My husband Jeffery Baxter has been layed off work since August 2009. We have been denied four times for food stamps. We have a thirteen year old girl, a twelve year old girl, and a nine year old boy. I really can't see a happy Christmas for my children. Is there any help someone could offer with such short notice? (12-13-2009)
I Helped a Hoosier... Hi my name is Tina Wilson, I am a 27 year old single mother of four. My children and I are in a crisis. This Christmas is the first time that I am scared to death that my children may wake up without a gift under the tree, infact at this time we don't even have a tree and are now currently living in a motel on the eastside of Indianapolis. At this point in my life I wish I had money or food or anything to give to someone homeless because for the first time in my life me and my children are. I have reached out to everyone i know to try to get help for me and my children. If there is anyone who can afford to donate just one toy to each of my children it will be accepted as a million dollars. My mom is an RN who recently lost her job and she has been the hoosier helping in my life and now we are together in a motel but the grace of god is keeping us together and allowing us to press on everyday in hopes that one of us will find a job or that we will have a tree for christmas. (12-8-2009)
