The Indiana Football Digest's Insider – 2017 Pre-Season

Posted Aug 17, 2017

By Paul Condry and Matt Kopsea

HOT OFF THE PRESS

While Indianapolis Marshall saw its program come to an end with the closing of the school this past spring, Wood Memorial and Trinity Lutheran both return to the field after a hiatus of one and two years respectively.

Indianapolis Northwest, Indianapolis Arlington, Indianapolis Broad Ripple, and Turkey Run will all be playing on the gridiron for the final time this fall. Northwest, Arlington, and Broad Ripple are scheduled to close at the end of the 2017-18 school year, while Turkey Run will consolidate with Rockville next year.

While Scottsburg competes in the state tournament for the first time, Bowman Academy will not get the chance after the school received a one-year post-season penalty in all sports by the Indiana High School Athletic Association because of numerous violations last spring.

Having to wait until 2018 to participate in the playoffs are Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, Rock Creek Academy, and Traders Point Academy.

As it turns out, only Carmel (Class 6A) and Fort Wayne Concordia (Class 3A) will have the chance to defend their state titles. That’s because Class 5A champion Westfield is now in Class 6A, Class 4A champ Indianapolis Roncalli has moved up to Class 5A, Class 3A winner Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter has shifted to Class 3A, and Class 1A titlist Linton-Stockton has been elevated to Class 2A.

North Posey is renaming its football field in honor of long-time coach Joe Gengelbach, who retired after the 2012 campaign with 256 career victories.
