Taking a look at the anatomy of the Colts scoring drives: Jaguars Edition

Posted Sep 30, 2013

Each week Colts.com will take a look at the Colts touchdown drives. For this week, here’s a look at the three offensive touchdown drives from the 37-3 win over the Jaguars.

Trent Richardson’s one-yard touchdown run:

The scene:
Leading 10-3, the Colts take over at the Indianapolis 19-yard line with 9:22 to go in the second quarter.

The anatomy of the drive:
6 plays, for 81 yards in 3:28.

Key play:
Week-after-week, Pep Hamilton mentions the need for Donald Brown and on this touchdown drive those words were clearly evident. The Colts were facing a second-and-nine at their own 33-yard line when Brown entered the game offensively for the first time on Sunday. The Colts lined up in a shotgun set with three receivers, one tight end (on the right side of the offensive line) and Brown to the left of Andrew Luck. On the snap, Luck handed to Brown and he followed a pulling Hugh Thornton, and a gaping hole created by center Mike McGlynn and right guard Jeff Linkenbach. Brown wasn’t touched until 15 yards down field, before he broke two tackles and scampered 50 yards to set up the Colts at the Jaguars 17-yeard line.

The score:
Two plays later the Colts had a first-and-goal from the Jaguars one-yard line, looking for the team’s first offensive touchdown of the afternoon. The Colts came out in a three tight end set (Joe Reitz tackle eligible) and Stanley Havili as the fullback in front of Richardson. On the snap, Richardson followed Havili and in-motion tight end Dominique Jones through the left side of the offensive line and into the end zone for his second touchdown with the Colts.

Coby Fleener’s 31-yard touchdown catch:

The scene:
Leading 20-3, the Colts took over at their own 37-yard line with 12:52 to go in the third quarter.

The anatomy of the drive:
2 plays, for 63 yards in 0:37.

Key play:
The first play of the drive quickly moved the Colts into Jaguars territory. The Colts lined up with two receivers (Wayne and Darrius Heyward-Bey) to the right and on the snap Luck faked a handoff to Richardson before rolling to his right, the wide side of the field. On the run, Luck fired a strike to Wayne who made a beautiful 17-yard reception along the Jaguars sideline for a first down. A 15-yard penalty was tacked on as Jaguars defensive end Jason Babin roughed Luck, moving the Colts to the Jaguars 31-yard line. The catch for Wayne marked the 68th straight time he has had at least three receptions in a game, which is an NFL record.

The score:
On the next play, the Colts line up in the same formation but flip the receivers to the other side of the formation. Luck then splits out Havili wide and on the snap he gives a subtle fake to Richardson. The Colts offensive line gives Luck all day to throw and he finds Fleener wide open for a 31-yard touchdown. Fleener, who had several impressive catches on the afternoon, finished the afternoon with five receptions for 77 yards.

Reggie Wayne’s five-yard touchdown catch:

The scene:
Leading 27-3, the Colts took over at their own 28-yard line with 9:57 left in the third quarter.

The anatomy of the drive:
12 plays, for 72 yards in 8:35.

Key play:
Fleener’s play since Dwayne Allen’s season ending injury has gone a bit unnoticed. Yet, he had another really productive game on Sunday. With the Colts facing a third-and-five at the Jaguars 24-yard line, Luck is an empty backfield with five receivers (Fleener, Wayne and T.Y. Hilton trips to the right). Fleener beats bracketed coverage and runs a crossing pattern as Luck slides to his left and delivers a strike into some tight coverage. This drive was 12 plays long but on the lone third down (until Wayne’s touchdown), Luck wasn’t afraid to thread the needle to his college tight end.

The score:
Wayne had a touchdown called back for an offensive penalty earlier in the game so this touchdown was “justice” according to Luck. The Colts had a third-and-goal from the five-yard line and once again were empty set, this time with Wayne in the slot to the left side of the field, next to Brown. Wayne makes a great double move just short of the goal line and Luck finds him wide open over the middle of the end zone. This was Wayne’s 80th touchdown of his career.
