THROWBACK THURSDAY: TURNOVERS LEAD TO ROAD VICTORY IN SHORT WEEK

Posted Jun 27, 2013

Intro: A short week for the Colts came to a close with a 27-10 road victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars thanks to the ball-hawking skills of cornerback Darius Butler.

INDIANAPOLIS – Darius Butler wasn’t even on the Colts roster the first time the Jaguars and Colts met in 2012, but he made sure Jacksonville knew exactly who he was on Nov. 8.

The Colts were missing six starters including both their starting cornerbacks and much had been paid about the team’s lack of creating turnovers in the previous weeks.

Butler put an end to all that with a pair of interceptions and a second quarter fumble recovery, which led to a Colts touchdown and a 17-0 lead for Indianapolis.

The highlight for Butler came early in the third quarter when following a downed punt at the Jaguars four-yard line, No. 20 put the game out of reach.

Butler jumped a pattern by wide receiver Cecil Shorts and intercepted Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert walking into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown.

For the first half the season, the Colts created just three turnovers but equaled that amount in four quarters on Thursday.

“It’s frustrating playing, doing the right things and not getting the ball,” Butler said. “We knew we just had to stay the course, do our fundamentals and techniques and they would start coming. Today they came.”

The Jaguars game opened the floodgates for the Colts secondary as they finished the season with a flurry of interceptions, including another pick six from Butler in Week 16.

“He’s been given a great opportunity, and he’s going to maximize it,” Colts interim head coach Bruce Arians said of Butler. “That’s what ‘Next Man Up’ is all about, two big plays. The first pick six was exactly what we needed. I think that was the whole ball game.”

OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHT:
Just four days after an air-attack against the Dolphins, the Colts grinded out the road victory in Jacksonville.

The Colts possessed the ball for a season-high 35:46 in racking up their most convincing win of the 2012 season.

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHT:
With a pair of Pro Bowl edge rushers, piling up sacks was something the Colts had already done once earlier in the season with five against the Packers.

The defense was back on it in Jacksonville, however this time it was the secondary who was getting to the quarterback.

Of the Colts four sacks on Nov. 8, three came from the secondary with safety Antoine Bethea and cornerbacks Josh Gordy and Tom Zbikowski all getting to the quarterback.

The unit also held the Jacksonville offense to 1-of-10 on third-down and limited Jaguars running back Rashad Jennings to 27 yards on 11 carries.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Interim head coach Bruce Arians did not fret over the lack of turnovers the Colts were creating heading into the Jaguars contest.

“I knew the turnovers were going to come sooner or later and they did. That’s one thing Chuck (Pagano) and I talked about this week. He said, ‘Just sit tight and don’t talk about it and it’s not going to happen,’ but they did, and they were big.”

INTERESTING FACT:
Thanks to Andrew Luck’s five- and one-yard scoring runs, the quarterback brought his season total to five.

That number broke the previous club mark that was shared by Bert Jones (1974) and Peyton Manning (2001, 2006).
