Ryan Kelly To Undergo Foot Surgery; Will Miss Start Of Season

Intro: Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said Thursday that starting center Ryan Kelly will undergo foot surgery and will miss the start of the 2017 regular season.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts will be without one of their key pieces on offense to start the 2017 regular season, as center Ryan Kelly will have to undergo surgery to correct an injury to his foot.

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano confirmed that news on Thursday after the team's final practice of the week before traveling to Dallas on Saturday to take on the Cowboys.

Kelly, the Colts' 2016 first-round pick, suffered the injury one week ago during a joint practice session with the Detroit Lions. Pagano initially hoped resting the foot would keep his center out just a week or two, but the team has since determined the best course of action is more of an immediate fix.

Without Kelly in the lineup Sunday in their preseason opener against the Colts, the team utilized rookie Deyshawn Bond and first-year lineman Adam Redmond at center. Brian Schwenke, a fifth-year veteran, was brought in this offseason as a free agent to be Kelly's backup, but has been on the PUP list since the start of training camp, also with a foot injury.

Pagano said Thursday that Schwenke is getting close to returning to the practice field for the team, and expects to see him "soon."

In the meantime, Pagano said, the team will roll with Bond and Redmond, while also continuing to explore any options on the waiver wire and in free agency that the Colts can bring in to help add needed depth at the position.
