Pat McAfee Breaks His Own News: The Boomstick Back In Indy

Posted Mar 7, 2014

Intro: Pat McAfee has spent the last week in southern California working for NFL AM. His uncertain future was cleared up late Friday morning when the Colts and him agreed to a new five-year contract.

INDIANAPOLIS – For the past week, Pat McAfee’s alarm would sound a little before 1:00 a.m. local time in California.

McAfee’s unusual sleep schedule was a must as he was a guest on NFL AM which is filmed in Los Angeles from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Pacific time.

As McAfee was about to begin his final segment of the week, the five-year veteran received a text message that let him know where he would be spending his next five NFL seasons.

Channeling his inner Adam Schefter, McAfee returned from the commercial to “break” his own news by announcing that the Colts and him had agreed on a new five-year deal.

“Win, win for everybody,” McAfee said on the Dan Dakich Show on Friday afternoon.

“We kind of knew what we both wanted at the end of the day, which was for me to be in Indianapolis. I’m just so happy to have another opportunity to be with the Irsay family and the Colts organization.”

This is the second straight season that McAfee has had to endure the free agent process.

After being franchise tagged in 2013, McAfee stayed far away from this year’s negotiations with his appearances on NFL AM occupying much of his time.

Serving as the Colts kickoff specialist and punter since being drafted by the Colts in 2009, McAfee is one of the most decorated kickers in franchise history.

McAfee is coming off a franchise record season in 2013 as he had 27 punts pinned inside the 20-yard line.

He is one of the most active Colts members in the community and many of his 186,000 followers on Twitter were in a frenzy on Friday morning when McAfee informed them of some breaking news.

“This is really cool,” McAfee said on NFL AM. “I love the city of Indianapolis and I’m so excited to be there for another five years.

“This is a lot of weight off my shoulders obviously. It was kind of interesting not knowing where I was going to live in a month or what I was going to be doing. I’m super excited to be back in Indianapolis, back in that locker room and hopefully win a bunch of games.”
