NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts Pick OT-Ulrick John in 7th Round

Posted May 10, 2014

Drafting in the 232nd overall spot in the 2014 draft, the Colts selected OT-Ulrick John of Georgia State.

INDIANAPOLIS – After opening the draft by selecting an offensive lineman with their first choice, the Colts concluded the draft by selecting offensive tackle Ulrick John of Georgia State.

John, 6-8, 290, was an all-conference performer and the school’s top lineman for the last two years.

John started 25 games at left tackle and has the versatility to play every line position.  John also was an option on tackle-eligible plays.

John started 10-of-11 games in 2012.  In 2011, he opened at three different positions in the first five games.

Indianapolis had seven different starting configurations on the line last year, having a six-game run near the end of the year opening with new alignments.

The only 16-game starters were tackles Anthony Castonzo and Gosder Cherilus.  The interior of the line found four different starting left guards, while three players opened at right guard and two at center.

Jack Mewhort (Ohio State) was Indianapolis’ top selection (59th choice overall).  Mewhort started 39 games, 26 over his final two seasons at left tackle.

Mewhort was not pegged for any slot on the line upon being drafted.  John likely faces the same prospects with the Colts.
