Million Meals Marathon

Posted Nov 25, 2014

In honor of National Philanthropy Day (Nov. 15), the Colts partnered with Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance to pack one million nutritious meals for Kids Against Hunger, which serves children and families throughout Indiana.

INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, November 18 more than 4,000 volunteers gathered at Lucas Oil Stadium for the fourth annual Million Meal Marathon. Volunteers packed nutritious meals that will be distributed through Gleaners, Midwest Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana to help end hunger for the one in four Hoosier children who are food insecure as well as globally through the United States Airforce Denton program. Colts players DE Cory Redding, LS Matt Overton, C/G Khaled Holmes, DT Kelcy Quarles, OLB Bjoern Werner and G David Arkin as well as Colts Cheerleaders volunteered alongside others.

Each day, some 14,400 children die from malnutrition, starvation and hunger-related diseases. 1 in 5 Hoosiers face food insecurity.  During the meal packaging blitz, volunteers packaged one million meals for the hungry here in Indiana and throughout the world. Volunteers also became better informed about the problem of hunger and how to respond to this need. The meals provide a stable nutritional base consisting of rice, soy, vitamins and dehydrated vegetables from which the recipient families can move from hunger and starvation to self-sufficiency.  By mobilizing the energy and compassion of Indiana children, teens and adults to package these meals, Kids Against Hunger creates an experience whereby volunteers are taught how they can make a difference in the lives of the poverty-stricken worldwide.

Million Meal Marathon is one of several Colts “Community Tuesday” events focused on hunger relief. Colts “Community Tuesdays” are a weekly initiative geared towards engaging players in the community and leaving a positive impact in Indianapolis.
