DEFENSE HOPING TO WELCOME ANGERER BACK

Posted Sep 27, 2012

It’s a physical break for the Colts players this weekend but for inside linebacker Pat Angerer, he’s looking forward to joining that physicality in the near future.

INDIANAPOLIS – The next four days at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center will be relatively quiet around the Colts locker room.

A four-day break began on Thursday morning for players and upon returning on Monday, a stretch of 13 straight games will be waiting for them.

Many players might physically be away from the complex but head coach Chuck Pagano reminded his team of the importance to not get too far from their playbooks.

“I’m definitely going to keep looking at my (playbook), looking at my assignments, keeping those things fresh in my mind, not just putting it away for the next four days,” defensive end Cory Redding said.

The defensive mindset heading into the bye week follows a similar script to what the offense has been preaching this past week.

Trying to turn the same momentum seen in the first quarter of games into the beginning of the second half will be a focal point starting in Week 5.

“We start out fast and we get on top of guys early. That’s a positive,” Redding said. “The negative is that we don’t finish.”

“Us as men, we got to look at each other in the mirror and say, ‘What can I do better so we can get over that hump?’ To be a complete defense, we have to start fast and finish faster.”

Redding and the defense could be receiving the presence of a pair of significant starters for the Green Bay game on Oct. 7.

After suffering a foot injury in the preseason opener, inside linebacker Pat Angerer has been forced to watch from the sideline for over a month.

“You enjoy the game until you can’t do it anymore. It’s been tough,” Angerer said. “I’ve been able to be a part of it and go to the games and still be helpful. You just miss being out there with the guys.”

Angerer was a force in the middle of the Colts defense last year, leading the team in tackles while making the calls for a 4-3 unit.

Even though the system changed, Angerer was still the man in charge to communicate the calls throughout the new defense.

Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman has filled in nicely in Angerer’s absence. Freeman has led the Colts in tackles in each of the first three games and has forced two turnovers.

“They’ve been doing a great job. (Jerrell Freeman) has been doing tremendous and Kavell (Conner),” Angerer said.

While watching from the sidelines has been difficult for Angerer, the chance to focus almost all his attention to rehashing the new 3-4 hybrid defense has been helpful.

“A benefit of sitting out is I’ve had a chance to kind of sit back and kind of learn the defense all over again and try to see what everybody else is doing,” Angerer said.

The next four days offers a brief break from the grind of 16 games in 17 weeks for the Colts.

Beginning on Monday, the entire roster will return to 56th street and for one player that return hopefully is complete with making his season debut against the Packers.

“I’m going to try,” Angerer said of suiting up against the Packers. “I’ve been out there running around a little bit. I feel good and I don’t know if I can sit around one more Sunday and do nothing.”
