Colts Celebrate 2013 NFL PLAY 60 Super School

Posted Nov 22, 2013

On Tuesday, November 19, six Colts players, Cheerleaders and Blue visited Brownsburg West Middle School to celebrate being selected as a winner of the 2013 NFL PLAY 60 Super School Contest.

INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, November 19, 2013, six Indianapolis Colts players, Cheerleaders and Blue visited more than 700 students at Brownsburg West Middle School (Brownsburg, Ind.) to celebrate Brownsburg West as a 2013 NFL PLAY 60 Super School! The school entered the contest during the NFL Back To Football campaign at the start of the 2013 NFL season by submitting an essay describing the many ways the school demonstrates Colts pride and how the school teaches its students the importance of staying active and eating healthy. Brownsburg West was honored during a “Community Tuesday” with a program including Colts players, Cheerleaders and Blue to help facilitate an NFL Ultimate Physical Education (PE) Class and a $10,000 grant check to help support its fitness programs.

Middle school students and staff lined up outside to show their excitement as Colts players arrived on a school bus. As the players entered the building, they ran through a tunnel of welcoming students waving Colts signs and giving the players high-fives. As the players entered the gym, they were greeted by more than 700 cheering students and staff to kick off the school assembly.

After opening remarks from Comcast Heartland Region’s Senior Director of Governmental Affairs Pete Nameth, Brownsburg West School Principal Laurie Johnson began the celebration by introducing the Colts players in attendance: OLB Daniel Adongo, FS Sergio Brown, CB Josh Gordy, LS Matt Overton, TE Weslye Saunders and G Hugh Thornton. Overton took the stage to speak to the students about the meaning of PLAY 60 and the importance of staying physically active and eating healthy. In a Q & A session, five kids had the opportunity to ask questions such as, “What inspires you as a player?” and “What is your favorite healthy snack?” One student asked the players about their touchdown dances. The kids cheered on Saunders as he demonstrated by pretending to catch an imaginary football in an end zone, followed by his exciting touchdown celebration.

Brown congratulated Brownsburg West on behalf of the Colts and NFL for the school’s commitment to PLAY 60 and presented the school with a $10,000 check to support the school’s health and fitness program. After the assembly, fifty students geared up to PLAY 60!

The students, along with the Colts players, Colts Cheerleaders and Blue, participated in an NFL PLAY 60 Ultimate PE Class to help the students get 60 minutes of exercise as part of the PLAY 60 campaign. To begin, Brownsburg West PE Teacher Cassie Brooks and Colts Cheerleaders led the group in stretching to help activate blood circulation and increase their heart rates.

Gordy and Thornton volunteered to lead the jump rope station that turned quickly into a skills contest. Overton and Blue challenged the students in a running back drill and taught them how to hold the ball correctly. Saunders showed the students how to properly use weights for toning and shared how he incorporates weights into his cardio exercises. Adongo had fun running with kids during a football relay race and Brown helped the kids work on their push-up and sit-up form. All equipment used for the Ultimate PE Class was donated to the school by the NFL for future fitness activities.

The event concluded with a team huddle and photo to commemorate the visit. Students and staff extended a final “thank you” to the players as the Colts congratulated Brownsburg West for their outstanding ongoing effort to PLAY 60.

Schools entered the NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest for the chance to be named one of 34 NFL PLAY 60 Super Schools. The contest requires schools to tell about their NFL-team pride, the state of their PE program and commitment to health and wellness through a series of essays.

Brownsburg West exemplifies Colts pride in many ways, incorporates PLAY 60 into their curriculum and encourages kids to be active whether at school or at home. Prior to earning the 2013 “Super School” title, the school was recently recognized as the Colts Fuel Up to PLAY 60 School of the Week through the Dairy Nutrition Council.

The Colts are proud to support the NFL PLAY 60 campaign efforts to confront the issue of childhood obesity that threatens our nation by encouraging youth and families to be active at least 60 minutes each day. For more information about Colts PLAY 60 programs, visit www.colts.com/PLAY60 .
