COLTS CELEBRATE 2012 NFL PLAY 60 SUPER SCHOOL

Posted Nov 28, 2012

On Tuesday, November 27, nine Colts players visited Triton Central Elementary, located in Fairland, Ind., to celebrate the school as a winner of the 2012 NFL PLAY 60 Super School Contest.

INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, November 27, 2012, nine Indianapolis Colts players visited more than 500 students at Triton Central Elementary (Fairland, Ind.) to celebrate the school as a winner of the 2012 NFL PLAY 60 Super School Contest! The school entered the contest during the NFL Back to Football campaign at the start of the 2012 NFL season by completing an essay describing the many ways the school demonstrates Colts pride and how they teach their students about the importance of physical fitness and nutrition. Triton was awarded as the Colts winner with a “Community Tuesday” visit from the team, which included facilitation of the NFL Keep Gym in School Physical Education (PE) Class.

The students were full of excitement as two cars full of Colts players pulled up to Triton. Colts Cheerleaders joined 1st grade students to line the sidewalk outside the school, welcoming the team with signs, poms and high-fives. A COLTSTRONG and CHUCKSTRONG presence could be felt walking down the hallways of the school as blue and white oozed from floor to ceiling with the hand-painted artwork of students. Once the players entered the gym, the school assembly was well underway with students cheering loudly in great anticipation.

Triton Central Elementary School Principal Linda Warnecke helped the team kick off the event by introducing the players: Colts WR Kris Adams, TE Dwayne Allen, SS Antoine Bethea, ILB Jerrell Freeman, WR T.Y. Hilton, OLB Jerry Hughes, LB Shawn Loiseau, LS Matt Overton and WR Griff Whalen. Bethea talked about the meaning of PLAY 60 and the importance of being physically active at an early age. On behalf of the NFL and Colts, Bethea congratulated Triton for their outstanding commitment to PLAY 60 and presented the school with a $10,000 check to support the school’s youth health and fitness programs.

After the check presentation, the floor opened up to allow five students an opportunity to do a quick Q & A session with players. The kids asked great questions to Allen, Bethea, Freeman and Overton, such as, “What do you eat to ‘fuel up’ before a game?” The students giggled when Freeman honestly shared, “Pasta.” Allen followed their questions by asking the students a few questions of his own to learn about what their favorite activities are to stay fit.

Once the assembly ended, it was time to PLAY 60! Fifty students participated in an NFL PLAY 60 Keep Gym in School PE Class where Colts players helped the students get 60 minutes of exercise as part of the PLAY 60 campaign. With the leadership of Triton PE Teacher Jan Jones and Colts Cheerleaders, the group began by stretching to increase their heart rates and to get their blood circulating for the activities.

Allen and Whalen raced across the gym to start a jump rope contest that transformed into basketball practice. Bethea and Hilton helped the kids work their push-ups and sit-ups. Adams and Overton guided the children in using proper toning techniques. For many students, it was the first time they had used weights! Freeman, Hughes and Loiseau had fun running the little ones through a football relay race and cone course. All equipment used for the Keep Gym in School PE Class was donated to the school by the NFL to use for future fitness activities.

Final moments of the event included a team huddle and photo to commemorate the visit. As the Colts said their goodbyes and congratulated the school again on a job well done, students excitedly lined the hallway to offer one last “thank you” to the team.

Triton Central Elementary is a school that exudes Colts pride and incorporates PLAY 60 into their curriculum on an ongoing basis. The students are constantly encouraged to continue to PLAY 60 whether at school or at home. Prior to earning the 2012 “Super School” title, the school has hosted a number of Colts- and fitness-related activities, from participating in the Colts Big Blue Football Camp to recently being recognized as the Colts Fuel up to PLAY 60 School of the week.

The Colts are proud to support the NFL PLAY 60 campaign efforts to confront the issue of childhood obesity that threatens our nation by encouraging youth and families to be active at least 60 minutes each day.  For more information about Colts PLAY 60 programs, visit www.colts.com/PLAY60.
